There is no mistaking a Golden Eagle. This bird of prey has a wing span of more than 2 metres with 6 fingers shaped feathers to the tips. Dark brown plumage with lighter golden yellowish colouring around the neck giving the appliance of a shawl, small head compared to body yellow colouring to its beak, bright yellow talons and long tail.
Golden eagles mate for life and return each year to the same nest, they can live up to 32 years. Pairs perform spectacular courtships flights plunging and looping acrobatics. There are approximately 500 breading pairs in Scotland mainly on the West coast.
A varied diet of hares, rabbits, grouse, deer calves, seabirds and carrion. They are very territorial with large home range covering 70 sq miles.
