Otters have an amphibious semi aquatic lifestyle, long slim bodies, short limbs and webbed feet. When on land there is no mistaking the otter for its dense brown fur coat and long tail. In the water they can be identified by their tiny ears and big whiskers, their square muzzle leaves a distinctive vee shaped wake with a chain of bubbles as they expel air.
The otter is secretive and elusive, but you may be lucky to see this playful creature just having fun, frolicking in the water, making water slides, rolling in the mud.
Living in Holts lined with moss and grass along the waters edge built under tree roots or rocky cairns. Average life span of 10 -16 years. Fish is their staple diet, many are expert at opening shellfish, clams, sea urchins.
